Expert Care for a Healthier, More Confident Smile

A routine examination at Denmark Hill Smiles isn't just a quick check of your teeth - it's a comprehensive clinical assessment of your overall oral health. Each appointment includes a detailed review of your teeth, gums, bite, soft tissues and existing dental work, alongside oral cancer screening and digital imaging where needed.

Led by Dr Jigna Joshi, our Principal Dentist, every examination is taken at the pace it deserves unhurried, thorough, and built around prevention rather than reaction. The goal is to spot issues early, when they're easiest to treat.

What is a Routine Examination?

A routine examination also known as a dental check-up - is a thorough clinical assessment of your oral health. It includes a detailed look at your teeth and existing restorations, your gum health, your bite, the soft tissues of your mouth, and screening for oral cancer. Digital X-rays are taken where needed to check what can't be seen on the surface. Most check-ups take twenty to thirty minutes.

Your Examination Journey

A routine examination at Denmark Hill Smiles is treated as the foundation of everything else the appointment where we get to know you, your smile, and the small details that shape your care over the long term. Every check-up begins with a conversation: any concerns since your last visit, any changes in your health, any goals or worries about your smile. From there, we move into the clinical part of the appointment- taking the time to be genuinely thorough.

What sets the experience apart is the depth of detail. Photographs, X-rays and digital imaging let you see exactly what we see, on the screen alongside us. Any findings are explained in plain language, with the rationale behind each recommendation. You'll leave with a clear picture of where things stand, a written summary if you'd like one, and a tailored plan for the next six to twelve months whether that's a hygiene visit, a treatment we've discussed, or simply seeing you again in due course.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have a dental check-up? arrow_forward_ios
For most adults, every six to twelve months is the right rhythm. If you're managing existing dental work, have a history of decay or gum disease, smoke, or are pregnant, we'd recommend six-monthly visits. Patients with low risk and excellent home care can sometimes extend to annual check-ups. We'll always tell you what frequency suits your specific case, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all schedule.
Do I really need X-rays every visit? arrow_forward_ios
No — X-rays are only taken when they're clinically necessary, typically every twelve to twenty-four months for most patients, more often if you're managing active dental issues. They let us see what's happening between teeth and below the gum line, where visible examination alone can't reach. Modern digital X-rays use a fraction of the radiation of older film-based ones, and we'll always explain why we're recommending one before taking it.
Will you tell me about cosmetic options I haven't asked about? arrow_forward_ios
Only if you'd like us to. At your first visit, we'll ask whether you'd like cosmetic suggestions as part of your check-ups, or whether you'd prefer to focus purely on dental health. If you do want them, we'll mention options that might suit your smile — but never push. The goal of a routine examination is information, not upselling.
What happens if you find something concerning? arrow_forward_ios
We'll explain it clearly, show you on the screen exactly what we're seeing, and talk through the options — including doing nothing where that's reasonable. Most findings at a routine check-up are small and easily resolved at a future appointment. For anything more involved, we'll book a separate consultation to discuss treatment options properly, with no rush to decide on the day.
I haven't been to the dentist in years — what should I expect? arrow_forward_ios
A genuinely warm welcome, and no judgement. A meaningful number of our patients return after long gaps — five, ten, sometimes twenty years. The first examination after a break is often a little more involved than usual, but we move at your pace, explain everything in plain language, and won't push you into anything you're not ready for. The most important visit is the one you book.
